Sensitivity After Fillings PDF Print E-mail
It is normal to experience some sensitivity to cold or pressure for a few days to a few weeks after fillings.  As healing occurs, this sensitivity should gradually go away.  In the meantime, we recommend Tylenol or Advil for pain.  Avoid cold foods and beverages, a softer diet, and drinking liquids through a straw.  As long as there is gradual improvement we consider the tooth to be progressing.  The larger the filling or the deeper the decay the longer the healing time may take.

If it appears that the tooth is getting worse instead of better, if you notice swelling, fever, or were told that the filling got very close to the nerve, it could be a sign that the tooth is beginning to abcess.  If you feel like your teeth don’t come together properly when you close, or if you are hitting on the filling before your teeth meet, then you will need a bite adjustment.  In either case you will require additional care and need to call our office.

If you request a follow-up visit and an abcess or bite problem is not diagnosed, then you will be responsible for a $25.00 office visit fee.  Your insurance does not cover office visits other than your routine check-ups or in the case that we can document an emergency.  This fee is less than our normal office visit and has been adjusted in an effort to allow you to obtain services that your insurance does not cover.
